About this palette maker

Palette Studio builds and edits the colour palettes a pixel artist works from. It can pull a palette out of an image you already have, generate a ramp from a base colour, or let you assemble one swatch at a time.

It exists because palettes move between programs badly. Exporting the same set of colours as a GIMP .gpl, a Paint.NET .txt, a plain hex list and a CSS block means the palette you chose survives the trip into whatever tool the rest of your pipeline uses.

How to use it

Drop in a reference image and choose how many colours to pull out of it.

Pick the extraction method: median-cut gives an even spread across the image, frequency gives you the colours that actually cover the most pixels.

Or build a ramp instead — set the number of steps, then a hue shift and saturation boost so the ramp turns as it darkens rather than just going grey.

Tidy the result with sort by hue, sort by lightness, dedupe, invert and clamp.

Export it, or hand it straight to Pixel Art Studio.

Formats and options

Export as a .hex list, a GIMP .gpl, a Paint.NET .txt, a PNG colour strip at your chosen block size and column count, CSS custom properties, or JSON.

Import .hex, .gpl, .json and plain text palettes.

Swatches can be renamed, duplicated, inserted mid-ramp and deleted individually.

Save the palette into the browser to pick it up again later.
