Houdini VEX Lab is a free library of 100+ copy-paste VEX snippets for Houdini artists. Every snippet is short, idiomatic and ready to drop into a wrangle, so you spend your time on the effect instead of re-deriving syntax.
Where these snippets run
Unless a snippet notes otherwise, the code assumes an Attribute Wrangle running over points. The same VEX also runs in a Geometry Wrangle, a POP Wrangle for particles, or a Gas Field Wrangle in a DOP sim - the difference is mostly which @ attributes are bound and what the wrangle iterates over. Paste, set the run-over to Points, and adjust the attributes to your scene.
Snippet categories
The library is organised into seventeen categories so you can browse by task instead of searching blind: Attributes, Points & Geometry, Vectors & Math, Noise & Patterns, Groups, Loops & Arrays, Strings, Ramps & Parameters, Color, Transforms, Matrices & Quaternions, Copy & Instancing, UVs, Volumes & VDB, Simulation, KineFX and OpenCL.
Popular examples
Some of the most-searched snippets have their own worked pages with inputs and common mistakes:
- Average an attribute with pcopen - the classic point-cloud blur.
- setpointattrib example - write attributes onto points you create.
- Randomise pscale - per-point size for copy-to-points.
- Build an orient attribute - aim each copy along the normal.
- rand by ptnum - stable random values per point.
- Remap with fit01 - map a 0..1 value into any range.
How to use a snippet
Search or filter for what you need, hit copy, and paste it into a wrangle. Read the one-line description and the comments, then rename attributes to match your geometry. Pair the snippets with the VEX function reference when you need to check a signature, and the global variables reference for the @ attributes each snippet binds.
Frequently asked questions
Are the VEX snippets free?
Yes. The whole library is free with no login, and it runs entirely in your browser.
Which wrangle do these snippets run in?
An Attribute Wrangle over points by default. Most also work in Geometry, POP and Gas Field Wrangles once you match the bound attributes and run-over setting.
Can I use them in production?
Yes. They are ordinary VEX you paste into your own wrangles. Always verify behaviour in your scene and Houdini version.
