Shopify vs WooCommerce for Australian Businesses

We build on both, so this is not a pitch for the one we prefer. The decision comes down to how much control you need and how much operational responsibility you want to hold.

Shopify is a product you rent. WooCommerce is software you run. Neither is better; they fail in different directions.

Cost of ownership, honestly

Shopify's cost is visible and monthly. WooCommerce's is hosting plus maintenance plus the occasional plugin conflict, which is less visible but not smaller. At small scale they land close together, so choose on fit rather than on a spreadsheet.

What it costs to build either

An e-commerce store starts at A$3,500 over four to six weeks on either platform, including up to 50 products and shipping setup.

Common questions

Which is better for SEO?

Neither has a decisive advantage. Site speed, content, and not breaking URLs matter far more than the platform.

Can we move later?

Yes, in both directions, and we do those migrations. Plan URL redirects carefully or you will lose rankings in the move.

What about Australian payments and shipping?

Both handle Australian gateways, GST and local carriers. Shopify configures faster; WooCommerce is more adjustable.
